8.8 million Indians live with Alzheimer's or Dementia

Nine in ten may never receive a diagnosis.

A new case of dementia emerges somewhere in the world every three seconds. In India the scale is staggering and the silence is louder still. The Mishra Foundation exists to bridge that gap — with evidence-based, compassionate care.

The crisis India cannot ignore

The numbers are staggering. The silence is louder still.

India is home to 8.8 million people living with Alzheimer's and related Dementia — a number set to double by 2036. Yet India has fewer than 1,000 trained geriatric psychiatrists for 1.4 billion people, and the average gap between first symptoms and diagnosis is three to five years. In that window, families are guessing, exhausted and increasingly isolated.

The cost is not only financial. In India, over 90% of caregiving is provided by family members — predominantly women — as invisible labour that carries no salary, little recognition and enormous health consequences, with caregiver depression rates ranging from 40 to 75%.

Proactive Intervention

Nearly half of all cases could be delayed or diagnosed in early stages.

The 2024 Lancet Commission identified 14 modifiable risk factors that together account for 45% of all dementia cases globally. India — with a vast younger population currently in midlife, proactive intervention is most powerful.

Early Detection Camps

Free memory screenings and cognitive assessments, delivered with neurologists and community hospitals across India.

Awareness Workshops

Plain-language dementia education for schools, RWAs, senior groups and corporates — to remove stigma and speed up diagnosis.

Caregiver Training

Evidence-based practical training for families and professionals — shown to reduce hospitalisation rates by up to 28%.

Family Support Circles

Moderated peer groups where caregivers share, breathe and belong.

Research Support

Funding and amplifying dementia research, with a focus on India-relevant care models and cost-effective interventions.

Dignity & Advocacy

Policy engagement and public advocacy so that no person with Dementia/Alzheimers, and no caregiver, suffers in silence or without rights.

Our story

Started small. Rooted deep.

The Mishra Foundation was conceived with the recognition that India's response to Alzheimer's and Dementia falls decades behind what families actually need. We are a registered non-profit voluntary organisation with programmes running across India and partnerships growing with institutions in the United States.

We are not a large organisation. But we are a committed one — rooted in the oldest Indian understanding of collective civic duty: that the wellbeing of each person is the responsibility of the community.

"India has one of the world's richest traditions of collective care. The Foundation seeks to extend these shared values to address one of the quietest health crises of our time: Alzheimer's and Dementia."
